Need for adaptation to new standards

A few decades ago, standards were few and held for a long time. This is no longer true:

• standards become increasingly complex, causing increased design, debugging and testing effort;
• ever more co-existing standards offer similar functionality, calling for devices that can process all of them;
• standards evolve faster and faster to meet new technological requirements, causing designs to become obsolete frequently.
